Abstract
Natural polymers have attracted immense consideration in the field of pharmacy due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, negligible toxicity and economical production. Starch isolated from mango seed kernel has emerged as a promising pharmaceutical excipient because of its physicochemical and functional properties. Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is one of the most economically important tropical fruits cultivated worldwide. The fruit is processed into juices, pulp, jams, beverages and other products on a commercial scale resulting in the generation of large amounts of waste including peels and seeds. The kernel present inside the seed constitutes a significant portion of the fruit and is an important source of starch, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and other phytoconstituents. In recent years, there has been an emerging interest in utilizing the kernel as a valuable source of starch with diverse pharmaceutical applications. This review compiles the information regarding the physicochemical properties, characterization techniques and pharmaceutical applications of mango seed kernel starch. The review also highlights the advantages and limitations of using starch from mango seed kernel as a pharmaceutical excipient.
