Abstract
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a devastating neuromuscular disease that is manifested by degeneration of the motor neurons, leading to progressive muscle weakness and atrophy, which is primarily caused by the mutations of the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene. Patients with SMA often present with feeding difficulties, dysphagia, malnutrition, obesity, and metabolic abnormalities, in addition to the muscle atrophy and weakness. Despite the availability of disease-modifying treatments, the importance of nutritional management in the treatment of SMAis well established, and several studies have demonstrated the potential benefit of nutraceuticals, such as vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, amino acids, and other bioactive nutrients. The review discusses the potential of nutraceuticals in the management of patients with SMA, describing their possible mechanism of action, along with providing evidences for their use and limitations. Nutraceuticals may play an important role as adjunctive treatment for patients with SMA; however, there is a need for additional research to confirm their efficacy and safety.
